The Craftsman style homes were inspired by the work of two brothers in the early 1900's, who were influenced by the English Arts & Crafts movement and oriental wooden architecture. Their work was promoted by several architectural publications of that time and it sparked the demand for Craftsman style bungalows. The one-story Craftsman style home quiclky became the most popular and fashionable smaller home in the country.
Identifying features of the Craftsman style include low-pitched gable rooflines with wide, unenclosed eave overhangs, knee brackets, exposed roof rafters, decorative beams and supporting tapered columns or pedestals.
