Fypon Products Enhance Arts & Crafts Style Homes

MAUMEE, OHIO – To complement popular Arts & Crafts style homes, Fypon offers Classic Woodgrain texture millwork for the home interior along with balustrade systems, beams and brackets for the home exterior.

"We identified the Arts & Crafts style in our new Style Guide as one of the five most significant and long-lasting home styles in America," says Kyle Crompton, product manager for Fypon. "Homeowners seem to crave the simplicity of this Craftsman home style and the associated rustic wood furnishings, millwork and lighting features."

According to Crompton, Fypon's new Classic Woodgrain texture was created especially to complement the Craftsman style, which leans heavily toward woodwork inside the home. For the interior, these new subtle woodgrain products include: crown mouldings, crossheads, plinth blocks, a beam, baseboards, casings and aprons.

For the exterior of a Mission, Craftsman, Arts & Crafts or Prairie style home, a new Fypon solid woodgrain closed-ended beam with a rafter end and a woodgrain bracket can enhance a porch. New tapered plain column wraps, and a square top and bottom rail combined with a rail support block can help create a porch system when matched with Fypon's existing square balusters. Dentil blocks, a timber trellis and fishscale panels from Fypon can all be used to fully create an Arts & Crafts exterior.

The Fypon Style Guide was created with assistance from Duket Architects Planners, an award-winning practice out of Toledo, Ohio that offers professional services in all phases of architecture, interiors and planning.

"We embraced the opportunity to share history on home styles of America with the Fypon team," says Joe Thourot, LEED AP, and associate at Duket Architects Planners. "We have 50+ combined years of practice in residential design so we put that knowledge to work in helping plan the Style Guide.

"Our specialty is designing a home that responds to the needs of its occupants. The designs we create --- whether modern, traditional or any other style --- stay consistent from the exterior to the interior of the home, with no facade being less important than another. It's that attention to consistency and holistic design approach that makes a really great home.

"We're excited to start specifying the new Fypon Arts & Crafts style Classic Woodgrain mouldings that our firm helped design. These pieces are bold and graceful, and they are historically accurate to the Arts & Crafts home style."

History Lesson: Arts & Crafts Style

Arts & Crafts style home designs got their start in America around 1905. Often referred to as Craftsman, Prairie or Mission styles, the common design element for these homes is a symmetrical style with a low-pitched roof and open eaves. The Craftsman style started in California and spread throughout the country. After the mid-1920s the trend declined until it was revitalized again in the 1990s.

The exterior of this home style, which is often associated with architect Frank Lloyd Wright, typically features dormer windows and multiple roof planes, tapered square porch columns, wide casing on windows and doors, along with exposed and extended rafters.

On the home's interior, natural materials, such as wood, stone and glass are key reflectors of the Prairie or Arts & Crafts style. These homes generally boast open floor plans, exposed rafters, joists and beams along with an array of stained glass windows and lighting fixtures. Built-in woodwork items, like bookcases and shelving, along with hardwood floors and rustic woodwork elements, are common design elements in an Arts & Crafts home.

Users of Fypon's new Style Guide are shown how to incorporate Arts & Crafts style polyurethane millwork into both existing homes and new home designs. As with all Fypon® products, the pieces recommended to support Arts & Crafts style homes resist moisture or insects. They also resist rotting, warping, cracking, chipping, peeling, and are weather resistant.

Fypon offers thousands of decorative millwork elements in a variety of architectural styles to enhance the interior and exterior of America’s homes. Each piece is crafted from tough, weather-resistant, high-performance materials that are resistant to decay, insect infestation and water damage for long-lasting beauty and low maintenance. Part of consumer products company Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc. (NYSE: FBHS), Fypon LLC is owned by Therma-Tru Corp. For additional information, call 800-446-3040 or visit www.fypon.com.
